What this website stores, what it measures with your consent, and how to change your choice at any time.
01In short
Fonts, styles and images come from this website’s own server; there are no advertising trackers, embedded videos, maps or social buttons. Two small cookies keep the site working: one stores your cookie choice, the other your language, and only if you pick one. Google Analytics counts visits only if you agree to it in the cookie banner.
If you reject analytics or close the banner, nothing is loaded from Google. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
02Who is responsible
The controller for the processing described here is the publisher of Web Compliance Journal, reachable at editors@epedoo.com.
03Cookies and visitor statistics
Everything this website stores in your browser or loads from another provider:
| Cookie or service | Purpose | Provider | Storage period |
|---|---|---|---|
site_consent | Stores your cookie choice: a random ID, the policy version, your choices and the time. Necessary. | This website | 180 days |
wcj_lang | Remembers the language you chose in the language menu. Necessary; set only when you use the menu. | This website | 1 year |
| Google Analytics 4 | Counts visits in aggregate (pages viewed, how visitors arrive, type of device) so that we can improve the site. Only with your consent to analytics. | Google Ireland Limited | Cookies _ga and _ga_*: up to 2 years; statistics: up to 14 months |
Google Analytics is loaded only after you agree; until then, and if you refuse, no request goes to Google. The legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time. Google may process the data outside the EU; it relies on the European Commission’s adequacy decision and on standard contractual clauses.
04Record of your choice
When you make a choice in the cookie banner, our server records it so that we can show that consent was given (Article 7(1) GDPR): the random ID from the cookie, the policy version, your choices, the button you used, the language, the page, the time, a shortened IP address with the last part removed, and a scrambled code of your browser type. The record is kept only as long as we need to be able to show your choice.
05Changing your choice
Open the cookie settings (also linked at the bottom of every page) to agree, refuse or withdraw your consent at any time. Withdrawing deletes this website’s analytics cookies and reloads the page.
06What the server receives
When your browser requests a page, it necessarily sends the server technical information: your IP address, the address of the page requested, the time, and the browser’s user-agent string. The server needs this to deliver the page.
Our hosting provider processes this data on our behalf and records it in server logs. The logs are used only to operate and secure the website, not for analytics or profiling, and are kept only as long as that requires.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in delivering and securing the website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
07Language choice
When you open the front page or another address without a language code, the server chooses a language edition for you: a language you chose earlier in the language menu, otherwise the country that the network in front of our server derives from your IP address, otherwise your browser’s language setting, otherwise English. The country and the language setting are used only for this choice; they are not stored, and your IP address is not recorded for it.
If you choose a language in the language menu, we store that choice in a cookie named wcj_lang for one year, so that the front page opens in that language next time. It contains only the language code, is set only when you ask for it and is never used for tracking. Because it only serves the function you asked for, it needs no consent; you can delete it in your browser at any time.
08Links to other websites
Articles link to vendors’ websites and official sources. Those links are ordinary links: nothing is loaded from those sites until you click, and our links ask your browser not to pass on the address of the page you came from. Once you leave this site, the other site’s privacy policy applies. Links to vendors’ websites carry a referral parameter that names this publication as the source of the visit; it contains no personal data.
09If you write to us
If you email us, we use your message and address to reply and, for corrections, to check and document the correction. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. We delete correspondence when it is no longer needed for those purposes.
10Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you (Article 15), to have it corrected (Article 16) or erased (Article 17), to restrict its processing (Article 18), and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Article 21). You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU member state where you live or work (Article 77).
11Changes
If we ever add anything that changes the statements above, we will update this page first. Last updated .
